Photo-reactive Installation
International Furniture Fair, Milan 2008
The polygonal segments of the surface react to ultra-violet light, mapping the position and intensity of solar rays. When in the shade, the segments of OR are translucent white. However, when hit by sunlight they become coloured, flooding the space below with different hues of light. At night, OR transforms into an enormous 'chandelier', disseminating light into the surrounding courtyard, an atmospheric space for events and gatherings.
The hues generated by the photoreactive surface are indicators of changes in weather and daylight, a dynamic architectural skin that can be used on building exteriors.
OR is a step in exploring the possibilities of photoreactive materials in the fields of Architecture and product design.
The fabrication and construction OR was to be executed under an extremely tight timetable. It presented a requirement for a procedural digital approach.
A sequence of unique digital tools were designed by scenario architecture , which facilitate the proliferation of 1600 unique segments on a Complex funnelling surface, and for flattening, naming and numbering the segments for cutting and assembly processes.
The project was developed in collaboration with Francesco Brenta, Christoph Klemmt, Laura Micalizzi and Elisa Oddone.
