On site Action–Re–Action design process
The site of the school-yard in this remote Ghanaian village was approached with a strategy rather a predetermined design. The underlining thinking was to react on site to local needs of staff and students to form this open classroom. The design strategy had to be simple and straightforward in the form finding and construction processes, in order to complete the project on schedule. Without adding or removing material from the site, we cut displaced, relocated and twisted pieces of earth, accommodating the spatial requirements of sitting, playing and lecturing as instructed by the local community.
The construction process was based on the Ferro cement technique. Once the form was established, a thin layer of reinforced concrete was applied to the mud surface.
In collaboration with Sotoko Katayose and Pavlos Sideris . Canopy design – Daniel Coll Capdevila.
