On site Action–Re–Action design process
The site of the school yard in this remote Ghanaian village was approached with a strategy rather a predetermined design. The underlining thought was to react on site to local needs of the school staff and students to form this open classroom. The design strategy had to be simple and straight forward both in form finding and construction processes, in order to complete the project within the tight time frame we faced.
Neither adding nor subtracting any material from the site, we cut displaced, relocated and twisted pieces of earth, accommodating the spatial requirements of sitting, playing and lecturing, set forward by local community.
The construction process was based on the Ferro cement technique. Once the form was established, a thin layer of reinforced concrete was applied to the mud surface.
