A Single pose surface
This handrail at the Architectural Association, London was formed following an observation of existing use. It was originally built for one user who would lean against the traditional linear handrail while on cigarette breaks.
The design response resulted in a slight push and twist of the banister to accommodate a relaxed leaning/ semi-sitting backwards position.
The rail has attracted many different users, smokers and non smokers, along with a raft of myths related to its origin.
