A Single pose surface

This handrail at the Architectural Association, London, formed following an observation of existing use and was originally build for one user who used to lean against the traditional linear handrail and smoke his daily lunchtime cigarette.

The design response resulted in a slight push and twist of the banister in order to better accommodate a relaxed leaning/ semi- sitting backwards position.

Since Then it attracted many different users, smokers and non smokers alike as well as a few myths about its origin.
